Starting and Charging
Your car battery may not be the only reason for your car not starting. It could mean that there is a problem with the starter, alternator and spark plugs as well.
The car battery is what powers your car and gives energy to power accessories such as the headlights and wipers.
If the starter fails because of electrical or mechanical issues, then you won’t be able to start your car.
If the alternator of your car is not working properly then you might notice the headlight or interior lights dim by itself. You might see plenty of other odd electrical problems occur when your alternator is not working.
At Carsplus, our trained mechanics will evaluate any starting and electrical issues and repair or replace the parts that are causing issues.
Starting and Charging Systems
So, how does it work?
Along with your car battery, there are two other components to your cars starting and charging system. These parts need to be in good working condition for your car to run properly.
Starter: When you power the ignition key, you are actually turning on the starter, and then that starts the engine. The starter is very important. When it is not working properly, the engine will have a very difficult time starting and in some cases it may not start at all. In most cases, starter problems are due to electrical/mechanical failure or complete breakdown.
Alternator: The purpose of the alternator is to recharge the battery while the car is running to keep it at peak starting power. The alternator is also part of a team with the battery to operate electrical components. When a alternator is malfunctioning it can cause electrical components to operate unpredictably.
What to watch out for?
If you are having trouble with the battery, there are a few thing you will want to check before calling us.
Ensure the battery is secured properly. Vibration can effect the lifespan of the battery.
The battery cables have to be clean and tightly connected. Corrosive buildup on the terminals can weaken the starting power. Also, make sure the side terminals are not overly tightened.
